The Order Medal and The Medallion
The Order Medal is unique and specific to the service. The Maltese Cross, an eight-pointed cross is the base, with enameled white for Navy and the CSIS, Red for Army and RCMP and Blue for the Air Force and Police. The badge is edged in gold, with four maple leafs at the base separating each arm of the cross. The quartered annulus within bordure or inscribed ”Royal Military Institute of Manitoba” azure, ensigned with a St. Edwards Crown.
The Medallion is a four-inch cast metal medal and awarded to Patriot and Twice the Citizen recipients. Quarterings: Dexter Chief; Union Jack, representing the historic affiliation with Britain and part of all original service flags. Dexter Base: azure background with a darker roundel and a guiles maple leaf on a white base representing the Air Force. Sinister Chief: St. Georges Cross, guiles on a white background, representing the senior service, the Navy. Sinister Base: guiles background with crossed swords or, representing the Army. The order medal is worn at the neck, in direction of the service regulations.
The medals and medallions were designed by Manitoba computer artist Kristopher Solar after extensive research into the history and design of medals and awards. The medals were cast in Calgary.
The Hubbell Awards
The Hubbell Awards were established in memory of Major Hubbell a former President of the Royal United Services Institute. These scholarships are awarded to deserving Cadets from the Sea, Army and Air Cadet units in Manitoba. For the past three years awards have also been presented to runner-ups in each element. Funding from the Winnipeg Airport Authority and the membership of the RMIM sustain these awards.
The Twice the Citizen Award
The Twice the Citizen Award is awarded to recognize individuals who have distinguished themselves in their lifetime achievements in both their military and civilian careers and who have made an extraordinary contribution to Canada. The award is a 4 inch diameter cast metal medallion with a cloisonne enamel crest of the RMIM, designed by a Manitoba Artist and mounted on a plaque or embedded in a framed scroll.
The award was established in 1999 by the RMIM to promote, protect and preserve Canada’s military heritage. Past recipients of this award are:

- (2000) Colonel James Dunwoody DSO, DMC,ED,CA, LGen Alan MacKenzie CMM, CD
- (2001) Brigadier Richard Malone OBE, ED, Colonel the Honourable Gildas L Molgat CD, BComm, LLD
- (2002) Rear Admiral Wally Fox-Decent CMM, CD, and HCol AM (Mac) Runciman OC, CD
- (2005) BGen John Law.
A special award was made to Dr. Frank and Izaline Davidson in Normandy France in 1999 to recognize their exceptional contribution to Canada's veterans of the DDay invasion. The award was not presented in 2003 & 2004. (Some are awarded posthumously).
The Institute Medal Awards
The Institute Medal Awards were established to provide recognition to members of the RMIM for their unselfish long term dedicated service to the nation as a member of the military or security forces. The medal is a Maltese cross with cloisonne enameled in service colours, Red for Army & RCMP, White for Navy & CSIS, Blue for Air Force & Police, centred with the RMIM crest, worn on a black silk ribbon around the neck and was designed by the Canadian artist who created the RMIM medallion. The first medal was presented to Maj. Alain Pineault-Air Command Band, then starting in 2001, to HCol Ken Langridge, BGen John Law, HCol Ben Van Ruiten, Paul Kolodziej, Art Maher, LCol Ivan Poitras, Col Gary Solar, Lt (N) Barry Burns, Maj. Howard Mar, F/O John Brown, and Col Doug Ludlow.
The Patriot Award
The Patriot Award is presented for exceptional and patriotic action on the part of an individual, group, or corporation and is to recognize their outstanding support to Canada’s defense or to our allies. The award is the Royal Military Institute Medallion mounted on a plaque accompanied by or embedded in a scroll depicting the action. The award can be presented for a singular act or for a long time commitment to our Allies and to the men and women who serve in Canada’s Armed and security forces. The award was established in 2001.
Recipients of the Award for:
- (2002) Peter Nygaard, Founder and Chairman of Nygaard International and Charles Adler, program host and Garth Buchko at radio station CJOB for their actions in support of our ally, the United States of America following the tragic attacks of September 11, 2001
- (2003) Colonel the Honourable Pearl McGonigal and Colonel the Honourable Jack McKeag. for their service as HCols and Lieutenant Governors of Manitoba and
- (2004) General Raymond Henault, the Chief of the Defence Staff.
The Outstanding Service Awards
The Outstanding Service Award was created in 2003 to recognize outstanding service in the promotion, preservation and recognition of Canada’s Military Traditions and History. The award is the Institute medal embedded in a framed citation. The first recipients were (2003) Maj. Fred Cleverley, and Capt Harry Mardon. (2004) MLA Bonnie Korzeniowski, Lieutenant Commander Jack Templeman and The Air Command Band.

Presented to 17 Wing and Air Command Band (1999), Mr. Barry Rempel CEO for The Winnipeg Airports Authority (2005).
The Bravo Zulu Award (Well Done)
The Bravo Zulu Award (Well Done) was created in 2006 and was awarded that year to acknowledge the contributions of individuals and organizations who have sponsored events and tributes in 2005 ”the year of the veteran”, to recognize the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform. The award was presented to Veterans Affairs Canada, The Province of Manitoba, The City of Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and Maj. Howard Mar for the series of Military Tattoos over the last decade.
